Google Forces You to Surf ‘Safely’ Away From Porn

cartoon evil - Bart SimpsonIt started in the USA and it’s coming your way. It’s already hit most English speaking countries, including South Africa where i stay. It is now impossible for you to turn Safe Search off. It’s set to Moderate with the only frustrating option being to rev it up to Strict.

On the bright side, Christians around the world are thinking that God Google has answered their prayers and – wait…oh…maybe substantiating beliefs in material gods isn’t the bright side – he he.

But what is handy is that when you type in an innocent word such as “teen”, “Mary” or “breastfeeding” into Image Search you will no longer have your search page dominated by sexy women, your sister or your mom attaining interesting sexual positions. Said as a positive because that’s damn SFW (Safe For Work).

Google censorshipYou are now more likely to get what you’re looking for…unless, of course, you were looking for porn. If you are the latter sort, you will have to be a lot more direct e.g. “Mom’s day at work porn” or “Helen Zille naked’.

Jokes aside, i get the practical aspect of it. Who knows, maybe Google will stop ninja jokes and terrorist threats from appearing when you type in “Moslem” or “Arab” – anything could happen:)

The problem with filtering is that, inevitably, there is a loss of freedom. Cool control in the present can always become bad control later (that is the nature of humans). Not least to mention is that this follows on with Google’s horrendous decision to tailor make search results for you i.e. they data mine you and deliver search results and adverts specific to your online browsing habits. I’d much rather have a true result than become a stereotype of myself. I love clicking on search results i wasn’t looking for because that increases my knowledge and makes the world a more interesting place. It makes surfing fun.

Google censorshipLet me finishing with a question:

If Google was already tailor making search results to match our browsing, and the majority of the world was still receiving porn results when searching for ‘Mary’, does that mean that the majority of world secretly looks at porn? 🙂
